So, as some of you may know, since the start of 2023 I have vowed to take at least one #SoloTrip per year (usually in August) to pour into myself and regain focus on my goals and aspirations. This is also time I use to relax and be free of all responsibilities other than myself. My very first #SoloTrip was to Puerto Rico August 2023 and although I was super nervous it turned out to be one of the most empowering things I have ever done.
I read many blogs that said as a female #SoloTraveler Puerto Rico was a good starting point and I have to say that I absolutely agree. But this year I decided to step it up a notch and take my #SoloTravels abroad. I wanted to go out of the country so I could stamp my newly renewed passport but not so far that my worrisome mother would be losing sleep. After a lot of back and forth and research I decided on #Tulum, Mexico. Now I have been to Mexico twice before (Cabo & Cancun) but my experience in #Tulum was definitely unique. Here's a little about how it went!
The Food, The Food, THE FOOD!
And just like that, I am hungry all over again! The authentic food in #Tulum was AMAZING! Like honestly, some of the best food I've had in a long time. Don't get me wrong, the authentic food in Puerto Rico was delicious also but very different. It's crazy how if you are not of Hispanic descent you are prone to thinking all Hispanic food is the same, when in fact, depending on where you are, it is all very different. Believe it or not, the picture with the rice and beans was a breakfast plate from my included breakfast package at my stay at #TheWavesTulum. By the way, I highly recommend this condo resort AND the breakfast package. Not one morning was I disappointed. The food was hot and freshly made each morning and the women in the dining area were the sweetest. Long story short, if you ever make it to #Tulum make sure you bring an empty stomach!
We Love a Good Entrance
Speaking of food, while in #Tulum I found myself spending a lot of time googling to find out where I could go to get both good eats AND a photo op/dope experience. Since I was only visiting for a very limited amount of time it was important to me that where ever I went had both. Also, since I didn't rent a car or an ATV like most people do when they visit, I also wanted the place to be within walking distance just in case. Unfortunately, one downside to #Tulum is that they do not yet have ride share apps available and the taxis' can be a little pricey.
While researching I came across this beautiful restaurant called #ElAgaveroCocina. The restaurant itself looks like a huge beautiful treehouse. The menu was authentic Mayan food (the shrimp tacos pictured above for example) and the atmosphere was super delightful. BUT that wasn't what made me walk 15 minutes in 90 degree weather. It was the fact that you literally have to walk across a man made pond in order to enter the restaurant. I mean, how cool is that!? Talk about #Instagram worthy entrances!
You Must Matcha Mama
I won't lie, I had no clue what the heck Matcha was when I got to #Tulum and I'm not really sure I know what it is now. But since we're speaking of #Instagram worthy photos, almost every article I read when doing my research on #Tulum mentioned visiting #MatchaMama, so I did. I ordered a fresh mango smoothie and watched as they literally peeled the mango and made it right in front of me. DELICIOUS, is all I have to say about that. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take the infamous #MatchaMama swing pic for #Instagram like most people do because of course the day I decide to visit the swings were being freshly painted. Just my luck, right?
The Sun is Alone too, But Still Shines
My favorite part about traveling solo are those moments of pure silence and peace. I have found that these moments usually come as the sun is coming up and as the sun is going down. While in #Tulum I had the pleasure of experiencing both. I never have these moments when I am home because for the most part there are never really times when I can be alone AND at peace. That being said, as I sat outside my room in or on my private jacuzzi with a glass of wine (even at sunrise) I realized that the desire to be alone is okay. It is okay to have moments where you don't want to be bothered with kids, or work, or partners or responsibilities in general. In fact, these moments are necessary for you to shine. So mamas, when you get these moments, hold on to them tight. They're definitely a dime a dozen.
So, I repeat, BOOK THAT FLIGHT, SIS! Whether it's one state over, across the country or across the world, DO IT! Don't wait for your partner, your bff, your sister or anyone else. All you need is YOU and a destination. At this point, one #SoloTrip a year is a must for me so stay tuned to see where I end up on my next!
