Halloween DIY for the Win

I believe that the love for #Halloween comes in phases. When you're a child you love dressing up, trick or treating and eating whatever candy your parents or older siblings didn't get to first. When you're a teen you love dressing up and trick or treating with friends, amongst other things. In high school and college it's all about the parties. And as an adult it's about the decorations and fun things you can do that don't involve you walking around in the cold for hours just for most of the candy to end up in the trash eventually.

But for me, the best part of #Halloween has become my chance to be a #DIY (do it yourself) guru. Every year around early September I ask myself what can I dress up as this year without actually buying a costume. Of course it's always easier to walk into your local #Target, #Walmart or #PartyCity and choose a generic costume that at least 3 other people will have on that night but nope, not me! There's something about coming up with a costume idea and piecing together stuff I already have or can find for close to nothing to make my very own look come to life, even if it is for one night. Over the years I've even instilled this line of thinking into the people in my household.

Let's be honest, who wants to spend an arm and a leg for a costume that your kid is going to wear for one night and never wear again. Especially when you have three kiddos! No thanks! So in my house, we make our costumes, for the most part. Here are few of my fav #DIY #Halloween looks from over the past few years.

Fire Man or Marshall?

I'm honestly not sure that this "costume" can even be considered #DIY since it's literally just firetruck onesie pajamas from #Carters. Nevertheless, the plastic fireman hat from #Walmart and his favorite #PawPatrol fireman truck added a little razzle dazzle. Looking back, I really cant distinguish what costume I was going for here. He was either the world's cutest fireman or he was Marshall from #PawPatrol. Either way he was super duper adorable.

The Dark Knight Joker

I received SO many compliments on this costume. From spray painted hair, to my #Joker face paint to my feminine #Joker outfit. Not to mention I was in full character most of the night (from what I can remember). It's fair to say that I killed the #DIY costume thing this year. The black tie and purple blouse I got from #Savers for under $10. The green tutu belonged to my daughter from a previous costume. The fishnets and boots were already in my wardrobe and the green hairspray and face paint costed me next to nothing. That night I went to an adult #Halloween party and I had a blast. All while wearing stuff that has mostly all been worn again at some point.

Here Comes the Men in Black

Because who doesn't love an awesome #DynamicDuo ? Two years ago my son and his best friend decided to go as the #MenInBlack. Although I'm almost positive that neither of them have ever seen the movie, I was thrilled because I knew it would be an easy #DIY look to piece together. So, of course, I headed over to my favorite place #SAVERS and of course I found EVERYTHING I needed. Blazer, pants, button down shirt all for less than $30. I already had the tie and glasses.

Rodney, That You?

First, let me start off by saying my husband does NOT celebrate #Halloween. Like, ever. Boooo to him! But the year that he decided to, I couldn't wait to "dress him up." Of course he insisted on "keeping it simple" so I went with a character who I felt like he already looked like. I also went with a character where he could basically wear regular clothes because I didn't want to push my luck. Once I had him convinced to actually go through with participating, we found his outfit, platted his hair and voila, Rodney from the film #BabyBoy was created (aka #SnoopDogg ). I even convinced him to pose and take this picture. Yay me! Unfortunately, I have yet to convince him to dress up since then but there's always this year, right? *side eye*

Mommy & Me

This one is my favorite. I couldn't wait to match my baby and hit the streets. Especially since my other brats NEVER EVER wanted to dress up with me or dress up as something that I could collaborate with. So, when Kyaire said that he wanted to be the #Hulk it was a no brainer that I would be his mommy #SheHulk. And if I was going to do it, I had to DO IT! So I did, as you can see. Green face and all. Just for him to only want to stop at 5 or 6 houses and then go home. But at least we got a few good pictures for memories!

You've Got a Friend in Me

So, this was last years giddy up and to say we NAILED IT would be an understatement. From the boots to the hats, we got SO many compliments on our #DIY #ToyStory costumes. I was in full Jessie mode, accent and all, and Kyaire was by far the cutest cowboy in town. But the most important thing about these outfits is that as a mom we have to think smarter and not harder. That being said shoutout to #Amazon for the zip up Woody hoodie that Kyaire wore even after Halloween! Big Win!

Stay tuned to see what #DIY #Halloween costumes I come up with this year!!
